Little Mike Retired, Headed To Old Friends For Retirement

Multiple Grade 1 winner Little Mike has been retired and has shipped to Old Friends, according to a Daily Racing Form interview with owner/trainer Carlo Vaccarezza on Thursday.

Vaccarezza said the horse is sound but his energy level is reduced from what it once was, and he felt Little Mike’s age may have caught up to him.

The 9-year-old son of Spanish Steps last ran July 10, when he made his first start in over two years in a Gulfstream Park allowance contest. He finished fifth.

Little Mike retires the winner of 14 races from 30 starts with earnings of more than $ 3.5 million. He won the G1 Arlington Million and G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf in 2012 for trainer Dale Romans before Vaccarezza took over conditioning the horse.

Little Mike is expected to arrive at the retirement facility in Georgetown, Ky. early Friday.
