Following El Areeb’s dominating performance in Saturday’s G3 Withers, the 3-year-old son of Exchange Rate returned to his home base at Laurel Park. Trainer Cathal Lynch said the colt exited the race well, but that he hoped to give him a bit more time between races for his next start, reports drf.com.
The Aqueduct schedule of Kentucky Derby preps includes two more races, the G3 Gotham on March 4 and the G2 Wood on April 8. Lynch plans to point El Areeb to the Wood, skipping the Gotham, so long as he can keep the energetic colt quiet enough.
“If I had my druthers, I’d give him a little easier time between races,” said Lynch. “He’s still growing, still gaining weight. He’s not 3 until April 14, he’s still a baby, we’re trying to protect him from himself. He enjoys training, enjoys the competition. He’d be a gym rat if he was a person. He’s that way, he enjoys the training.”
