Cheyenne Stables and Mac Nichol’s Madefromlucky found the winner’s circle for the first time in over two years on Monday, galloping home the facile victor in the G3 Greenwood Cup at Parx Racing. The 5-year-old son of Lookin at Lucky, ridden by Javier Castellano for trainer Todd Pletcher, sat behind Scuba’s early pace and took over on the far turn, covering 1 1/2 miles over the fast main track in 2:32.72 to win by 12 1/4 lengths over Testosterstone.
Let Me Go First came out of the gate running, but Scuba demanded the lead from his innermost post position. Drawing away by 1 1/2 lengths the first time down the stretch, Scuba set quick early fractions for the distance of :23 4/5 and :47 2/5, stretching his lead out to three lengths before he could be eased back to mark six furlongs in 1:12 3/5. Meanwhile, Midnight Cello chased the leading duo from third, three-wide on the course, while Castellano kept Madefromlucky tucked in at the rail in fourth.
Entering the backstretch, Castellano moved Madefromlucky up to a joint third and eventually took over second as Midnight Cello and Let Me Go First began to fade. Angling out in the far turn, Madefromlucky easily overtook a tiring Scuba, who did not run on. Turning for home with a three-length advantage, the race was over as Madefromlucky galloped out to the wire under a hand ride to win by 12 1/4 lengths. Testosterstone came from sixth to finish second, while Let Me Go First re-rallied for third. Bodhisattva finished fourth.
Bred in Kentucky by RMF Thoroughbreds, Madefromlucky was originally a $ 70,000 yearling at the Keeneland September sale. Pinhooked by Crupi’s New Castle Farm, he brought $ 150,000 at the OBS March sale. He broke his maiden fourth out, then recorded his first graded stakes win in the G2 Peter Pan. He won the G3 West Virginia Derby two starts later, but had not found the winner’s circle since. Madefromlucky has consistently placed in graded company over the past two years, and the Greenwood Cup win brings his career record to 5-5-5 from 23 starts, with earnings of over $ 1.2 million.
