Masochistic winning the G2 Pat O’Brien Aug. 27.
Star crossed Masochistic, who has by any measure, a most unusual lifetime resume, will make his 7-year-old debut going seven furlongs in Saturday’s Grade I, $ 400,000 Triple Bend Stakes—his first start since being disqualified from second place purse money in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita on Nov. 5.
Fifth in his debut for trainer A.C. Avila going six furlongs in a Cal-bred maiden special weight here on March 15, 2014, Masochistic was subsequently dispatched as the 2-1 favorite on Kentucky Derby Day at Churchill Downs in an open maiden special going six furlongs on May 3, 2014—the result, a 14 length triumph.
Transferred to Ellis following his sixth start on Feb. 28, 2015, he promptly annexed the Grade II Kona Gold Stakes on April 11, 2015, the Grade I Triple Bend Stakes on June 27, 2015 and was then second in the Grade I Bing Crosby Stakes on July 26, 2015.
Second, beaten 1 ¼ lengths by eventual Eclipse Champion Sprinter, Drefong, in the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Sprint, which was his 14th career start, Masochistic tested positive for a prohibited medication and was subsequently stripped of the $ 255,000 he had been awarded for running second.
So, it’s back to the drawing board for the California-bred gelding by Sought After, who’s owned by Los Pollos Hermanos Racing and Jay Em Ess Stable. He brings a sparkling work tab to Saturday’s Triple Bend that includes a six furlong gate work in 1:10.60 here on Feb. 13—fastest of 21 at the distance.
Probable for the Grade I, $ 400,000 Triple Bend Stakes: Conquest Cobra, Denman’s Call, Kobe’s Back, Masochistic, Moe Candy, Point Piper and Silent Bird.
