Little Red Feather Racing’s Midnight Miley sprang the 25-1 upset Sunday afternoon, stealing away on the front end under Rafael Hernandez to win Woodbine’s G3 Ontario Matron Stakes by 4 1/2 lengths. This is the first graded stakes victory for the 4-year-old daughter of Midnight Lute, who covered 1 1/16 miles over the fast Tapeta in 1:43.74 for trainer Julia Carey.
Midnight Miley broke sharply under Hernandez, but the jockey quickly took hold of the filly as she moved to the rail for the lead. He kept her to a steady pace through a first quarter in :24.99, but made a quick decision approaching the second quarter, allowing the filly to sprint out to a six-length lead to mark the half-mile in :48.88. Race favorite Flipcup was along the inside of the second flight early on, but dropped back near the half-mile pole and was never again in the race.
Easing her back up to mark three-quarters in 1:12.98, Hernandez and Midnight Miley still held a five-length advantage on the field. Down the stretch the filly hit another gear, and despite the strong late charge of Miss Chatelaine, Midnight Miley crossed the wire 4 1/2 lengths in front. Miss Chatelaine was second, and Moon Rainbow nosed out Hot Kiss for third.
The riders of Moon Rainbow and London Tower posted claims of foul for interference at the start of the race, but both were disallowed by the stewards.
Bred in Kentucky by Mark Secrest, Midnight Miley was a $ 45,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase. Her career record now stands at five wins from 14 starts, with earnings of over $ 237,000.
