Firing Line, seen winning the 2015 Sunland Park Derby. The colt has suffered another training setback and will not race at Del Mar Aug. 24
Firing Line, winner of the 2015 G3 Sunland Derby and runner-up in the Kentucky Derby that year, will be forced to miss his intended start in Wednesday’s Harry Brubaker Stakes after suffering a minor setback.
Trainer Simon Callaghan told the Blood-Horse that the colt appears to have strained a muscle.
“He’s just a bit tight behind,” Callaghan said. “It looks like a muscle thing. He’s sound, but it’s something small.”
Firing Line was sidelined close to a year after dealing with a foot issue and having a chips removed from both of his front ankles. The colt finished fifth in an optional claiming race at Santa Anita July 9 in his first start back.
Callaghan indicated he was still hopeful of being able to make the Breeders’ Cup with the colt.
