RYAN MOORE is rated the world’s top Flat jockey based on a new set of global rankings launched on Wednesday.
Moore heads the first list of TRC Global Rankings, which are based on a formula that has Racing Post Ratings (RPRs) as a key element, by a clear margin.
Frankie Dettori sits in second spot and Australia’s Hugh Bowman third in a top ten which boasts a strong European presence with Christophe Soumillon fourth, Pat Smullen ninth and William Buick tenth. Javier Castellano is the leading jockey in the US, according to the new system.
Standings for trainers, owners and stallions have also been produced for TRC’s worldwide top 500 lists, which will be updated weekly based on a rolling three-year period.
Coolmore head every category with Aidan O’Brien holding a substantial lead at the top of the trainers’ standings, the Coolmore partners topping the owners’ list, and their stallion, Galileo, is the world’s number one sire.
The system uses results from nearly 1,500 Group and Graded races staged each year in the major racing nations. It has been developed by international website Thoroughbred Racing Commentary from a rankings algorithm devised by former Racing Post writer James Willoughby.
An individual’s position in the rankings depends entirely on how well their representatives have been running. RPRs are used to help calculate the merit of every performance of every runner in each of the races. The more recent the race, the more it counts for. No consideration is given to the amount of prize-money won, the reputation of a race or the odds.
TRC editor Chris Smith said: “Most major sports have world rankings. Golf and tennis have had them for years, and they are integral parts of those sports. Yet horse racing, a massive, multi-billion pound industry with huge jurisdictions on every continent, has no real rankings for the people involved. We thought it was high time it had.
“We believe we have arrived at an industry-standard system that truly reflects the impact jockeys, trainers, owners and stallions have been making over a rolling three-year period. There is nothing else like this in existence for racing.”
