Mor Spirit and Mike Smith went wire-to-wire in winning the G3 Sexton Mile
Mor Spirit took the lead at the start and never looked back as he cruised to a 5 3/4-length victory in the G3 Steve Sexton Mile at Lone Star Park May 7.
The Steve Sexton Mile was formerly named the Texas Mile; the track renamed the race in honor of Steve Sexton, who was an original member of the track’s management team. Sexton passed away in December at 57.
The Sexton Mile was the second straight stakes victory for Mor Spirit, who won the Essex Handicap in March at Oaklawn Park. The 4-year-old son of Eskendereya may now be pointed to the G1 Met Mile.
Texas Chrome closed late to take second, with Iron Fist another 1 1/4 lengths back in third. Final time for the mile was 1:36.86.
