Weatherbys Super Sprint 5f, 2yo
JONATHAN PORTMAN warned punters on Saturday morning that the drying ground may be against 9-2 joint-favourite Mrs Danvers – but any worries were quickly eased as the filly maintained her unbeaten record to claim the big pot.
The Lambourn trainer landed the first prize of £122,925 with the daughter of Hellvelyn, who was steered to a relatively straightforward victory by Luke Morris, adding another high-profile victory to his CV this season.
Eve Johnson Houghton’s Diable D’Or showed blistering pace in the first two furlongs to ensure a ferocious gallop, finding many of the 23 runners out but not Mrs Danvers, who was untroubled and travelling well behind the pacesetter.
Morris made his move inside the final two furlongs, leading the field just before the furlong pole and finding plenty for pressure to hold off the late closers.
Stormy Clouds, trained by Richard Hannon who was bidding for a ninth family success in the race, stayed on dourly in the closing stages to finish a length and a quarter behind the winner in second at 20-1, while the other joint-favourite, Clem Fandango, kept on to take third.
