‘Nice And Smooth’: Songbird Impresses In Thursday Morning Work

Songbird (Medaglia d’Oro) and jockey Mike Smith win the Coaching Club American Oaks (Gr I) at Saratoga

Undefeated champion Songbird turned in a sharp five-furlong work at Saratoga Thursday morning.

The Daily Racing Form’s Mike Welsch timed the 3-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro in 1:00.65 for the five furlongs. Welsch also had the filly covering the first three eighths in 36.75 seconds; Songbird covered the last quarter in 23.90 seconds.

It was Songbird’s first workout since her victory in the G1 Coaching Club American Oaks July 24.

“This was a really nice and smooth work,” trainer Jerry Hollendorfer told the DRF. “I’m very pleased.”

Hollendorfer had planned to work Songbird on Wednesday, but held off in order to let the track dry out more. The track had been a bit heavy earlier this week after rains on Sunday and Monday.

“I’m really happy that I waited til today, I thought it was a much better racetrack,” Hollendorfer said. “You know, the track’s still a little bit deep because she got a little bit of a blow out of it.”
