Northlands Park: Court System Likely To Determine Winner Of Canadian Derby

Chief Know It All wins a first-level allowance at Oaklawn Park, Feb. 2017

Last weekend’s running of the G3 Canadian Derby at Northlands Park provided fans with a very exciting finish, involving three horses, a photo finish, both a trainer and jockey objection, and a dead-heat. Even after Chief Know It All was declared the winner at the track, it may end up that a court of law determines the official winner of the race.

According to a report in the Edmonton Sun, Rod Cone, the trainer of Double Bear – who finished in a dead-heat for second with Trooper John – filed an appeal earlier this week with Horse Racing Alberta against the official result of the race.

Both Cone and jockey Dane Nelson lodged objections immediately after the race, but they were eventually disallowed by the stewards. After the race Nelson said, “(Chief Know It All) bumped me several times.”

“He kept coming down on me,” Nelson continued. “At the top of the stretch bang, I was against the rail. Then bang. He hit me again.”

Neither the stewards or Northlands Park officials will comment on the decision, since it now under appeal. The Sun reports that when the track announcer made the announcement of the decision, the reason given for why the inquiry wasn’t allowed was that “Double Bear hit the back-end of Chief Know It All, which turned Chief Know It All into hitting Double Bear.”

According to the Sun, the appeal will be heard by a “tribunal appointed by the provincial government” which is “totally independent from Horse Racing Alberta”. A hearing date has not yet been set.
