SILVER RAINBOW, unbeaten in three outings since being covered by Cable Bay, will have a crack at Group 1 glory at York next week after connections confirmed she would be supplemented at a cost of £30,000 for the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes.
Trained by Charlie Hills for Richard Tufft, Silver Rainbow captured handicaps at Newbury and Newmarket before a smooth success in a Listed race at Deauville last month.
A return to the track for the Group 3 Prix de Meautry on August 28 had been an option, but Tufft is keen to go for gold.
“It’s a no-guts-no-glory view,” he said. “She’s a filly in form and as a small owner you get very few shots in a Group 1 and she goes there with an outside chance. Being in foal has been the making of her.
“We may get that chance again, but as someone who is not throwing 100 horses at it every year we might not. You’ve got to take these opportunities as they come. If she runs creditably I’ll be delighted and her coming home safe is the goal, but we’ll give it a shot.
“She’s in great nick and has come back from Deauville bouncing – fresh as you like and ready to go again – and Charlie’s stable is in great nick. It’s a five-furlong sprint and they all get their chance.”
Silver Rainbow, initially with Hills’s late brother John, will be added to the field at the confirmation stage on Saturday.
“She goes on any ground, but I think she’s better on fast, summer ground,” added Tufft, who hopes William Buick will be able to ride.
“The ground when she won at Newmarket was quick and I think that was her best performance, even though she went and won the Listed race at Deauville. She was visually stunning at Newmarket. I’d rather it was on the fast side of good as I think Profitable and Mecca’s Angel are better with cut.”
