Nyquist breezes at Santa Anita July 4.
This year’s Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist will now remain at San Luis Rey Downs through the entire month of August, according to the Daily Racing Form. He was originally scheduled to stay for just two weeks, utilizing the training center’s swimming facilities to stay in shape during what trainer Doug O’Neill called a growth spurt.
“It’s nice and quiet,” O’Neill said. “He’s putting weight on. He’ll work there a few times and then go to Santa Anita.”
O’Neill now plans to have Nyquist rejoin his main string at Santa Anita in September, where he will then evaluate the colt to determine if a start in the Pennsylvania Derby will be possible. That race will be held on Sept. 24 at Parx Racing.
