O’Brien Sends Out Six In Wide Open Investec Derby

A field of nineteen will go to the post Saturday for the Group 1 Investec Derby, the largest field for the classic since 2003.

Considered to be a wide-open edition with no clear cut standout, favoritism may likely fall on Cliffs Of Moher, one of six runners from trainer Aidan O’Brien’s stable. Jockey Ryan Moore has chosen to ride Cliffs Of Moher, a son of Galileo who won the listed Dee Stakes in his last start. O’Brien’s other runners are Capri (Seamie Heffernan), Douglas Macarthur (Colm O’Donoghue), The Anvil (Ana O’Brien), Venice Beach (Donnacha O’Brien), and Wings of Eagles (Paddy Beggy).

Young Joseph O’Brien, who rode Derby winners Camelot (2012) and Australia (2014), will saddle his first Derby runner as a trainer when he sends out Rekindling. Wayne Lordan will ride.

Frankel will be represented with his first two Derby runners on Saturday when Cracksman and Eminent go to the post. The John Gosden-trained Cracksman (Frankie Dettori) is undefeated in two starts. He defeated fellow Derby runner Permian in the Investec Derby Trial.

Eminent (Jim Crowley/Martyn Meade) has won two of three starts, most recently finishing sixth behind Churchill in the G1 Two Thousand Guineas.
