A field of sixteen 3-year-old colts will take their chances in Saturday’s Group 1 Investec Derby at Epsom Racecourse.
Trainer Aidan O’Brien will saddle five of the runners, led by the undefeated US Army Ranger. The son of Galileo, who will be partnered by Ryan Moore, captured the G3 Chester Vase in his last start. O’Brien will also send out Port Douglas, Deauville, Shogun, and Idaho. Shogun will be ridden by O’Brien’s youngest son, Donnacha, who will be riding in the Derby for the first time.
John Gosden, who trained 2015 Derby winner Golden Horn, will attempt to win this year’s edition with Wings of Desire, winner of the G2 Dante Stakes. Wings of Desire races as a homebred for Lady Bamford, and is a full brother to Group 2 winners The Lark and Eagle Top. Gull Wing, the dam of Wings of Desire, is a half sister to Sariska, winner of the G1 Investec Oaks and G1 Darley Irish Oaks in 2009.
Post time for the Investec Derby is approximately 11:30 a.m., EDT
