Paulassilverlining Guts Out Determined Win In Madison Stakes

Paulassilverlining (Ghostzapper) wins The Madison (G1) at Keeneland on 4.8.2017. Jose Ortiz up, Chad Brown trainer, Juddmonte Farms owners.

Juddmonte Farm’s Paulassilverlining ran a big race in Saturday’s G1 Madison Stakes, taking the lead from Constellation in mid-stretch and then having to hold off a second challenge from that rival to keep her head in front at the wire. Paulassilverlining is a 5-year-old daughter of Ghostzapper trained by Chad Brown; the bay mare covered seven furlongs over Keeneland‘s fast main track in 1:23.68 under Jose Ortiz.

“I have to give credit to (former trainer) Michelle Nevin,” said Brown. “I only got her (Paulassilverlining) a month ago and she did most of the work to get this horse ready, so I’ll share the win with her. She did a terrific job. A lot of credit goes to Garrett O’Rourke (of owner Juddmonte Farms), who made the deal to buy her. I was lucky enough (Juddmonte owner) Prince Khalid wanted me to train her.”

Kathballu was the quickest out of the gate along the inside, but Constellation returned fire to take the lead early in the backstretch. Constellation proceeded to draw her lead out to a full length over Kathballu through early fractions of :23.03 and :46.40, followed by Ponder Lea and Paulassilverlining along her outside. Mines and Magic traveled in fifth along with Paid Up Subscriber at the rail.

Turning for home, Constellation gave up the two-length lead she’d earned when she carried herself wide with her momentum. The opening allowed Paulassilverlining up the rail to have a clean running lane down the stretch, and at about mid-stretch she took over from Constellation. With 100 yards to go, Constellation re-rallied and laid her heart on the track for jockey David Flores, but Paulassilverlining was just able to hold her off by a head for the victory. Constellation had to settle for second, and Paid Up Subscriber ran on well to finish third.

“(The trip) was great,” Ortiz said. “She broke really well. When I cut the corner at the quarter pole, she kicked on. Great training job by Chad as always, and I’m just happy she had the opportunity.”

Bred in Kentucky by Vince Scuderi, Paulassilverlining was taking her first G1 race in the Madison. The talented sprinter finished third in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint last fall, and boasts an impressive record over the New York circuit. Overall, she has won nine of her 19 career starts for earnings of over $ 1.2 million.
