TOP NOTCH made it two from three over fences when having too much speed for Romain De Senam in the home straight.

Last season’s Champion Hurdle fifth has taken to his new discipline well, and the pace he had for hurdling was evident by the way he stretched clear of the runner-up.

The front pair had eyeballed each other for much of the race, but when push came to shove, Top Notch delivered a more fluent leap at the second-last, and another slick jump at the last sealed victory.

Winning jockey Daryl Jacob said: “I was very happy with him, it shows he’s coming on for every run. It was another learning curve and he’ll be all the better for it. He’s getting quicker and slicker over his fences.”

BetVictor cut Top Notch to 16-1 (from 20) for the Racing Post Arkle, and 14-1 (also from 20) for the JLT Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

Trainer Nicky Henderson is building a strong arsenal for the novice chase division, as he also trains Arkle favourite Altior.
