Why we all love jumps racing – the veteran Raz De Maree, 13 years young, lands the Coral Welsh National at Chepstow for Irish trainer Gavin Cromwell and jockey James Bowen.
Bowen, a highly-touted prospect and seen as a young rider destined for the top, shows he’s also a man for the big occasion as the 16-year-old and Welshman lands his country’s biggest race – and in his first season riding. The jockey is only three years older than Raz De Maree!
Runner-up in the race last season, Raz De Maree made the return trip to wales to triumph in the big one this time – a yard favourite, the evergreen veteran is the apple of his trainer’s eye, never mind his advancing years. “He’s a fabulous little horse. He has such heart – he’s brilliant. He just doesn’t know when to give up.”
Bowen said: “You grow up watching these races at home – to win it in my first season riding is amazing.”
