DEFINITLY RED laid down a big marker for the Randox Health Grand National when demolishing the field under Danny Cook.

The race had been billed as a trial for last year’s winner The Last Samuri. He was struggling a long way out, but to his credit stayed on strongly to claim second.

Cook said: “He felt great. I knew he was well-handicapped all season and it’s nice to get aboard him and win a nice pot. Hopefully now all roads lead to the National. If he jumps round there he’s potentially very good.”

Trained by Brian Ellison, Definitly Red has been progressive throughout his career and his latest win was the tenth of a 19-race career.

Generally a 33-1 chance before the Grimthorpe, the eight-year-old was cut to as low as 14-1 for Aintree, although he can be backed at 20-1 in places.

Although officially beaten by 14 lengths, there was a lot to like about the way The Last Samuri stuck to his task, and he was left untouched at 16-1 by the majority of firms.
