Japan’s Epicharis, who qualified to run in the Kentucky Derby off his victory in the Hyacinth Stakes at Tokyo Racecourse in February, has been confirmed as a starter for the Belmont Stakes June 10.
The Daily Racing Form reports that should the 3-year-old colt by Gold Allure win the Belmont, he would earn a $ 1 million bonus from NYRA, which is offering a bonus for any Japanese-based horse that wins the 12-furlong classic.
According to the Form, the Belmont Stakes will become the first Triple Crown race to be offered for wagering in Japan. That wagering will be conducted through a separate, non-commingled pool.
Epicharis won his first four starts before finishing a close second to Thunder Snow in the G2 UAE Derby.
Epicharis, who is expected to ship to Belmont on June 1, will be ridden by Christophe Lemaire.
