Sarah Sis Holds Off Living The Life In Presque Isle Masters

Joe Ragsdale’s Sarah Sis returned to the winner’s circle Monday after a pair of tough outings at Saratoga. The 4-year-old daughter of Sharp Humor took the lead out of the gate in the G2 Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes, and was just able to hold off the defending champion Living the Life by a head on the wire. Ridden by Florent Geroux and trained by Ingrid Mason, Sarah Sis recorded a final time of 1:16.42 for 6 1/2 furlongs over the firm Tapeta course.

Sarah Sis broke very alertly for Geroux, immediately jumping out to a one-length advantage over the field. Geroux was able to keep her both relaxed and happy, ears pricked, through a first quarter in :23.89. Unbridled Courage moved up to Sarah Sis’ flank entering the turn, pressuring the leader along with Birdatthewire, but Sarah Sis remained nonplussed, continuing on her pace to record the half-mile split in :46.66.

At the top of the lane, Sarah Sis held the lead by a neck over Birdatthewire, with Living the Life rolling up strongly while five wide. Birdatthewire dropped out of the race rather suddenly, leaving Sarah Sis with a one-length lead again. Living the Life rallied furiously to catch Sarah Sis, but Geroux had doled out her speed perfectly and had just enough left to hold off the defending winner of this race by a head on the wire. Living the Life would have to settle for second, and Bar of Gold closed well to be third. Elusive Collection was fourth.

Bred in Kentucky by Dr. Catherine White, Sarah Sis was a $ 20,000 purchase at the June OBS 2-year-old sale of 2014. Since then, she has won five graded stakes races, including the Masters. Ragsdale entered the filly in the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Mixed Sale in 2015, but decided to buy her back after bidding stopped at $ 1.2 million in the ring. Overall, Sarah Sis boasts a record of 8-4-0 from 21 career starts, with earnings of over $ 900,000.
