Made You Look, a More Than Ready colt racing for Let’s Go Stable and Three Chimneys Farm, rallied up the rail in the stretch under Javier Castellano to win Wednesday’s Grade 2 With Anticipation Stakes at Saratoga, giving trainer Todd Pletcher his fifth win in the turf stakes for 2-year-olds in the last nine years.
French-bred Keep Quiet finished two lengths behind the winner in second, with Bird’s Eye View closing late to get third ahead of Monsoon KSA in a field of eight.
Time for 1 1/16 miles on firm turf was 1:43.12.
Bred in Kentucky by the Robert and Beverly Lewis Trust, Made You Look was produced from the Unbridled’s Song mare Night and Day, a daughter of the Hall of Fame filly Serena’s Song, who carried the Lewis silks to 11 Grade 1 victories and won an Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old filly of 1995. Night and Day finished off the board in her only career race.
Made You Look was purchased by Let’s Go Stable and Three Chimneys for $ 360,000 at the 2015 Keeneland September Yearling Sale from Denali Stud, agent. Second in his career debut going five furlongs on turf at Belmont May 27, Made You Look won next time out as the favorite in a six-furlong maiden race on turf at Belmont June 18. The With Anticipation was his third career start.
Off a bit slowly, Made You Look saved ground throughout while racing just behind a battling trio of Gemologister, Monsoon KSA and Keep Quiet. Opening fractions were :24.26, :49.34, and 1:14.14. When the field hit the stretch, Castellano went through a an opening along the rail to seize command, hitting the mile marker in 1:37.34 and drawing away for the victory under moderate encouragement.
“We were getting a beautiful trip; it was just a matter of whether he was able to find a spot to go through,” said Pletcher. “I thought for a young horse to shoot through there was pretty brave on his part. He’s been training really well, we were looking forward to a good effort, he got a good trip, and he delivered. He’s got a fantastic pedigree, top and bottom side. It’s a lot of fun for us to have a son of More Than Ready — it was 1999 when he won the Sanford. He’s just been so good to our stable, not only him but all of his offspring.”
Pletcher said the Grade 3 Pilgrim at Belmont Oct. 1 could be Made You Look’s next start, though added he might train the colt up to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf without another race.
First run in in 2005, the With Anticipation previously has been won by Pletcher-trained 2-year-olds in 2008 (Bittel Road), 2009 (Interactif), 2013 (Bashart) and 2015 (Azar).
