Continuing his preparation for the Grade I, $ 300,000 Awesome Again Stakes Oct. 1 at Santa Anita, California Chrome worked six furlongs in 1:13.20 over his home track Saturday morning at Los Alamitos.

Under regular exercise rider Dihigi Gladney, the son of Lucky Pulpit went the opening quarter of a mile in 25.60 seconds, the half-mile in 49, five furlongs in 1:01.20 and galloped out seven furlongs in 1:27, according to Los Alamitos clocker Russell Hudak.

“What impressed me was the last quarter of a mile,” said trainer Art Sherman. “I had him going the last eighth in 11 and change. We’ll work him seven-eighths of a mile here next Saturday (Sept. 24) and he should be ready for the Awesome Again.”

Based at Los Alamitos since January, 2014, California Chrome, who is owned by Taylor Made Farm and co-breeder Perry Martin, has won 14 of 23 and banked $ 13,252,650. He won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness en route to Horse of the Year honors in 2014.

The 5-year-old earned the 10th graded stakes win of his career when he dominated Beholder and Dortmund in the Grade I, $ 1 million TVG Pacific Classic Aug. 20 at Del Mar.
