Sherman: California Chrome ‘Impressed’ With Last Quarter Of Six-Furlong Move

In his penultimate breeze before the G1 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 1, California Chrome again impressed trainer Art Sherman with a six-furlong workout over the Los Alamitos oval, according to bloodhorse.com. Early Saturday morning under regular exercise rider Dihigi Gladney, the striking chestnut son of Lucky Pulpit recorded splits of :25 3/5, :49 2/5, and 1:01 1/5 en route to a 1:13 1/5 final time for the distance.

“What impressed me was the last quarter of a mile; I got him in the last eighth of a mile in :11 and change, and that’s where the money is,” Sherman said. “He galloped out in :27. I’ll get one more work in him next Saturday going seven-eighths, and he’ll probably gallop out a mile, and we should be ready for the Awesome Again the following week.”

California Chrome has won all five of his races through the 2016 season, including a romp in the $ 10 million Dubai World Cup in March. The 2014 Horse of the Year may well be on his way to securing a second title, especially after his visually impressive performance last out in the Pacific Classic, dominating three-time Eclipse Award winner Beholder by five lengths.
