THERE was bright sunshine at Ascot on Wednesday morning for day two of Royal Ascot with the ground remaining soft after a dry night.

A total of 11mm of rain fell on Monday night and into Tuesday turning the going soft, but there has been no further rain since the end of racing on Tuesday.

Ascot clerk of the course Chris Stickels has been battling with an unsettled forecast and once again sunshine and showers are predicted, as they are until the weekend.

He said: “The going remains soft but the ground is less wet than it was yesterday. We’ve been dry since the end of racing yesterday but there could be showers again today.”

With the ground soft there is some doubt about the prospects of The Grey Gatsby lining up in the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes (4.20). However, Promised Money is the only non-runner so far in the Sandringham Handicap (5.35).

All six races are live on Channel 4 on Wednesday with the first race taking place at 2.30pm. The winners of Tuesday’s Scoop6 will be chasing a bonus pool of nearly £2 million in the Hunt Cup at 5pm.
