Some In Tieme Comes From Way Back For Louisville Handicap Victory

Alecibiades Azvedo’s Some In Tieme came from well off a slow pace to win Saturday’s Grade 3 Louisville Handicap at Churchill Downs by about four lengths despite traveling erratically in the stretch. The Brazilian-bred son of Shirocco is a dual Group 1 winner in his home country, but this was his first stateside graded win for trainer Kenny McPeek. Ridden by Manoel Cruz, the 5-year-old covered 1 1/2 miles over the firm turf in 2:27.25.

Reporting Star broke well on the backstretch and held about a 1 1/2-length lead as the field entered the stretch for the first time, setting fractions of :24.33, :50.11 and 1:15.00. Gold Shield and Kaigun tracked that pace, as Bullards Alley was at first fourth until passed with an early move by Street Fashion entering the backstretch for the second time. Some In Tieme was well off the pace in second-from-last position in the early going.

Around the far turn, Gold Shield and Street Fashion came up alongside Reporting Star, as did last year’s victor Bullards Alley while four-wide. Straightening into the lane, Some In Tieme suddenly appeared on the far outside, making a furious rally while diving toward rivals on the inside rail. Luckily, the intact horse’s momentum carried him past other horses to avoid incident as he cruised to about a four-length victory. Reporting Star kept on for second, with Bullards Alley grinding on for third. Gold Shield held fourth.

Bred in Brazil by Haras Santa Maria de Araras, Some In Tieme won a pair of Group 1 contests in South America. He came to the United States off a layoff in early 2017, starting under Paulo Lobo in California that didn’t result in any on-the-board finishes, but Some In Tieme was most recently second in an allowance at Keeneland when first starting for McPeek. Overall, his record stands at 4-2-1 from 10 starts with earnings of over $ 400,000.
