Eclipse Award winning Songbird had her first workout of 2017 Sunday morning at Santa Anita, breezing through three furlongs in :35 4/5 and galloping out four furlongs in :48 2/5. Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer was pleased with the exercise from the 4-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, reported bloodhorse.com.
“It was very nice and smooth, and she galloped out nicely,” Hollendorfer said. “It’s the same with all horses—you take one step at a time.”
Owned by Fox Hill Farm, Songbird was undefeated in the first 11 starts of her career, and suffered her only defeat in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff last fall in a valiant effort against champion Beholder; the two were separated by a whisker at the finish line. A minor hind-leg injury delayed the start of Songbird’s 2017 training, but the striking bay filly seems to be back on track now. Plans for her next race have not yet been finalized.
