Champion Songbird will make her 4-year-old debut in the G1 Ogden Phipps Stakes at Belmont Park June 10.
Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer confirmed the news Thursday morning with the Daily Racing Form. Songbird’s connections had been debating whether to run the filly in the $ 400,000 G1 Beholder Mile at Santa Anita June 3, or send her to Belmont for the Phipps, which is worth $ 750,000.
“The degree of difficulty between the two races is probably about the same,” Hollendorfer told the Form. “But one purse is 750, and the other purse is 400. That was a big factor. Plus, it would give me another week to work with her and get her ready before Belmont day.”
Regular rider Mike Smith is scheduled to work Songbird Thursday morning at Santa Anita.
