TALKTOTHESTARS (Coenie de Beer/Gavin Lerena) had several of these behind when giving weight all round in the Grade 1 Tsogo Sprint Handicap over this trip at Scottsville last month and now meets them under weight-for-age conditions in the Mercury Sprint (2.20BST).
Piere Strydom, who rode him that day, partners last month’s convincing Turffontein winner Trip Tease for his former brother-in-law Louis Goosen but said: “I have been riding for Louis and owner Mr Ferreira for so long that I don’t want to mess things up for just one ride. If that was not the case I would have chosen to ride Talktothestars without a doubt.”
Trip To Heaven (Sean Tarry/S’Manga Khumalo) has been the gamble of the last three days, being backed from 7-1 to 100-30 favourite. He finished first in the Grade 1 Gold Challenge over a mile here five weeks ago but was relegated to second for interference. He has some smart form over this trip.
Gulf Storm (Brett Crawford/Corne Orffer) won the big Cape Town sprint – the Cape Flying Championship – over a furlong less in January but ran below that form in the Scottsville race.
Crawford said: “I put blinkers on for the Cape Flying but I made the mistake of leaving them on in the six furlong race and he pulled too hard. I will take them off this time and I am sure he will run a much better race.”
Red Ray (Joey Ramsden/Anton Marcus) returned from a 16-month absence to take fourth at Scottsville but disappointed here next time.
Real Princess (Dean Kannemeyer/Anthony Delpech) won the Grade 1 Fillies Sprint at Scottsville, beating Fly By Night (Mike Bass/Brandon Lerena) by a length and a quarter), and Kannemeyer said: “She is a better horse than she was six months ago and she has fantastic cruising speed.”
