NEARLY two inches of rain overnight into Thursday has left Sandown waterlogged in places as the course prepares for its two day Coral-Eclipse meeting which starts on Friday week.

There is standing water on a three-furlong section around the home bend and on the first part of the home straight to the pond after the second deluge on such a scale to hit the track in a week.

Clerk of the course Andrew Cooper said on Thursday: “I’ve never seen it like this before at this time of the year. It’s even a rare occurrence in the winter.

Just too much

“It’s heavy, waterlogged in places and we would not be racing on it today or tomorrow. There is a lot of standing water around the place.

“We had 45mm on top of 45mm last Thursday night. In all we’ve had 105mm in a week. Until last night it had coped with everything reasonably well.”

The highlight of the meeting is the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse for which Time Test was on Thursday the top-priced 7-2 favourite ahead of Prince of Wales’s Stakes winner My Dream Boat, available at 13-2.

Time Test appears unlikely to line up unless the ground is at least good but a softer surface would be of no concern to the Clive Cox-trained My Dream Boat.

No crystal ball

Cooper added: “The short-term forecast is unsettled and you are struggling to see a prolonged hot spell. But we are still more than a week away from the Eclipse meeting and it’s a pointless exercise trying to guess what it will be like.”
