Three Injuries, One Fatal, Postpone Beholder’s Work At Del Mar

Injuries to three racehorses during the training hours of 6:30 and 7:15 a.m. at Del Mar, which resulted in one fatality, led trainer Richard Mandella to postpone his star mare Beholder’s planned workout Saturday morning, reports the Daily Racing Form.

“I’ve got a stomach ache. She doesn’t, but I do,” Mandella said. “We’ll do it tomorrow. She’ll gallop today.”

Whiskey and Wine, an unstarted 2-year-old from the barn of Jeff Mullins, was euthanized as a result of her injuries. Flavien Prat was aboard during the workout, but escaped without injury.

Big Book, a 4-year-old three-time winner trained by Tim Yakteen, suffered a fractured sesamoid during a workout. Surgery will be attempted, according to her connections. She was nominated to the Clement L. Hirsch, alongside Beholder, next Saturday.

Joelito, a 6-year-old coming back from a 1 1/2 year layoff, suffered a tendon injury during his morning gallop. Trainer Kristin Mulhall indicated that it was not severe.
