Thunder Snow Back On Top With ‘Monster’ Prix Jean Prat Victory

Godolphin Racing’s Thunder Snow, now infamous for his bucking episode at the start of the 2017 Kentucky Derby, continued along the path to redemption with a victory in Sunday’s Group 1 Prix Jean Prat Stakes at Chantilly. Under regular rider Christophe Soumillon, the 3-year-old son of Helmet led all the way to cover the one mile course over turf rated “good” in 1:38.78, beating Trais Fluors by 1 1/4 lengths at the wire.

“After Ascot he has felt good and this race was there for him. The plan was to make the running as we wanted a good pace for him,” said trainer Saeed Bin Suroor, Thunder Snow having most recently finished third behind Barney Roy, winner of Saturday’s Coral-Eclipse) in the St. James’s Palace Stakes. “There are three races we have in mind for him for the future. There is the Juddmonte (International) and the QEII and the Prix Jacques le Marois in France.

The Prix Jean Prat is Thunder Snow’s second Group 1 victory; his first came as a juvenile in the Criterium International. In 2017, the colt has won the UAE 2000 Guineas (G3) and UAE Derby (G2), finished second in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas behind Churchill, and finished third to Barney Roy in the G1 St. James’s Palace Stakes. Overall, Thunder Snow has a record of four wins, three seconds and a third from 11 starts, with earnings of over US$ 1.7 million.

“He’s a monster,” Soumillon told the Paris Turf. “The race went well. He was able to go to the front and relax. When I asked him to accelerate he was very professional.

“I think he should rest now. I am certain that he can make a Dubai World Cup horse.”
