Toast Of New York won the 2014 UAE Derby.
Kentucky-bred Toast of New York (Thewayyouare – Claire Soleil, by Syncline) is under evaluation for a possible return to training, reports racinguk.com. The 6-year-old has been standing stud in Qatar for new owner Al Shaqab Racing, who purchased the colt after his heart-wrenching loss to Bayern in the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Toast of New York sustained a tendon injury in that Classic effort which forced his early retirement. The winner of the UAE Derby has not had the chance to cover a lot of mares in Qatar’s small breeding industry, so Al Shaqab racing manager Harry Herbert reported that the horse had returned to the UK for veterinary evaluation.
“His tendon injury has now had plenty of time to heal and we just felt it was worth another shot,” Herbert said. “I must stress that at this stage he is some way off returning to training. However, should all go well, that is what we’d like to do.”
