TRIBAL BEAT came with a late run to shock the Aidan O’Brien pair of Cougar Mountain and Hit It A Bomb as he landed the Group 3 Desmond Stakes as a 9-1 shot.
Hit It A Bomb, who was last seen extending his unbeaten run when winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland in October, was sent off the 13-8 favourite and looked the most likely winner as he loomed on the shoulder of early leader Don’t Bother Me.
However, without the aid of company he found very little and it was the fast finishing pair of Tribal Beat and last year’s winner Cougar Mountain who contested the finish, with the former coming out on top.
Bolger said: “We had little problems with Tribal Beat. None of them were serious but they cropped up one after the other.
“He’s a good horse and he had been pleasing us over the past six weeks or so. I’d say a mile or maybe nine furlongs are the trips for him. I don’t view him as a mile and a quarter horse but I’ve been wrong before. I’m not sure about plans.”
Aidan O’Brien was happy enough with the performance of his runner. “Hit It A Bomb just got tired after coming to win,” he said. “I expect him to come on a lot for the run and he could come back here for the Group 2 Boomerang Stakes on Irish Champion Stakes day next month.”
