TRIP TO PARIS warms up for a possible return visit to Melbourne in Friday’s Group 2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup at York, a race in which he is top-rated of the seven runners.
Ed Dunlop has taken a softly-softly approach with last season’s Gold Cup winner, who returned to the track from serious injury at Newbury only last month.
“Thankfully we’ve had a good run with him since Newbury and we elected to sidestep the Goodwood Cup this year to wait for this,” said Ed Dunlop.
“He’s back at two miles, which will suit him, and he goes there a fresher horse than some of the others. Graham Lee knows him well and we’re very hopeful.
“If all goes well we could look at going back to Melbourne, but we’ll know more after this.”
Mullins chasing Irish hat-trick
Ireland has won this race for the past two years with Pale Mimosa and Max Dynamite, and the latter’s trainer Willie Mullins bids to secure an Irish hat-trick with Wicklow Brave, another horse who could be on his way to Melbourne later in the year.
“His run in the Goodwood Cup was encouraging, although he’ll need to improve on it,” said Mullins.
“I’m expecting him to do that and he has good form over the course, having run second in the Ebor last year.”
