Gun Runner worked five furlongs Feb. 13 at Oaklawn in preparation for the G3 Razorback Feb. 20
Three Chimneys Farm and Winchell Thoroughbreds’ Gun Runner had his final U.S. work Saturday morning, predicating the 4-year-old son of Candy Ride‘s overseas voyage to the $ 10 million Dubai World Cup to face champion Arrogate. At the Fair Grounds, Gun Runner breezed a six furlongs in 1:12 for trainer Steve Asmussen. The colt will ship to Florida on Sunday, according to bloodhorse.com, where he will be quarantined until his flight to the United Arab Emirates.
“It’s kind of unchartered territory, but up until this point he’s been a pretty good shipper,” said Winchell racing manager David Fiske. “He’s pretty much been all over the country, coast to coast. He’s going in a box stall so if he wants to lay down he can. I guess he’s in business class—he has one of those fold-down seats.”
The third-place finisher in last year’s Kentucky Derby, Gun Runner finally got his first G1 win in the Clark Handicap against older horses last fall. This year, he debuted in the G3 Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn Park, dominating by 5 3/4 lengths on Feb. 20. Overall, Gun Runner boasts earnings of $ 2,337,800 with seven wins from 13 starts.
