Unified Turned Out, Won’t Return Until 2017

Sophomore colt Unified, winner of the G3 Bay Shore and G2 Peter Pan, will be turned out at owner Centennial Farm’s Virginia base, reported the Daily Racing Form on Monday. The son of Candy Ride will not race again in 2016.

“Nothing really glaring, just a lot of little things,” said trainer Jimmy Jerkens of the reasons behind the colt’s break. “Hard races and hard training. He’ll be all right though.”

Unified broke his maiden in style at Gulfstream Park this winter, sprinting six furlongs in 1:08.95. He followed up that win with scores in the Bay Shore and Peter Pan, then Jerkens sent him to Monmouth for the G3 Pegasus, where he came up a bit flat-footed to finish fifth in his first start around two turns. Unified did breeze once since the Pegasus, but Jerkens decided that he “looked like he needed a break,” and will likely pick him back up in December en route to Palm Meadows in Florida.
