Del Mar: Matriarch Stakes (Grade 1) 1m, turf, 3yo+ f/m

A THIRD visit to Royal Ascot next year is on the cards for Miss Temple City (Graham Motion/Edgar Prado), who completed a Grade 1 treble for 2016 with a last-gasp success in the Matriarch.

The four-year-old has finished fourth at the royal meeting in each of the last two years, first in the Coronation Stakes and then the Duke of Cambridge.

She has thrived back at home, however, winning against males in both the Maker’s 46 Mile and the Shadwell Turf Mile before touching off Roca Rojo and Stays In Vegas in a three-way finish to the Matriarch, in which she was sent off 8-5 favourite, despite starting on the outside in gate 11.

“I had a little bit of a sick feeling in my stomach when they hit the wire,” said trainer Graham Motion, who has also won Graded stakes with Ring Weekend and Journey Home during this short winter meeting at Del Mar.

“I was a little bit worried at the top of the stretch as well. I think we were a little too cute with her earlier in the year, trying to get her covered up and take too much of a hold on her. She’s got a lot of natural speed and the key is to get her settled.”
