Belmont Park: New York Stakes (Grade 2) 1m2f, turf, 4yo+ f/m

THE Marco Botti-trained Kyllachy Queen was never a factor before coming fifth in the $ 500,000 New York Stakes, which ended in a 1-2-3 for top US turf trainer Chad Brown.

The 5-1 chance Dacita (Irad Ortiz) finished best of all wide of the bunch to beat odds-on favourite Sea Calisi by three-quarters of a length with Guapaza another half-length away in third.

The runner-up was fairly unlucky: trying the inside route under Jose Ortiz, the winning rider’s brother, she got bottled up before being angled out and then stumbling in the final furlong.

“All three horses ran terrific, so that makes the trainer happy,” said Brown. “Sea Calisi unfortunately didn’t get a great trip inside. I felt like if she could have gotten clear maybe she would have had a better kick than she showed, but that’s turf racing, especially in a short field with moderate pace.”

Sent off a 37-1 longshot, Kempton Listed winner Kyllachy Queen was short of room a furlong out after racing in mid-division and then allowed to coast home, finishing fifth of seven.

Belmont Park: Belmont Gold Cup Invitational (ungraded) 2m, turf, 4yo+

After challenging five wide on the final turn in this unusually long race by US standards, Da Big Hoss (Mike Maker/Florent Geroux) rolled on to his sixth win in nine starts since being claimed by his current trainer nearly a year ago.

The 11-5 favourite took this $ 300,000 event by a length and a half over French-trained visitor Now We Can. The American St Leger over nearly 1m6f at Arlington is the winner’s next target – not that there’s much choice for a stayer in the US.
