USA: Joseph O’Brien’s chances of winning a first Breeders’ Cup race as a trainer were done no harm at all after his sole runner at the meeting, Intricately, was given a perfect draw of stall seven in the Juvenile Fillies Turf.
She was cut to 4-1 joint-favourite (from 9-2) by Coral to land the race for O’Brien and his younger brother Donnacha, who again takes the ride. In the same race his father Aidan O’Brien’s pair Roly Poly – the chosen mount of Ryan Moore – and Hydrangea were drawn in the extremes of 13 and one.
O’Brien’s large squad endured mixed fortunes at the draw, although several key hopes such as Seventh Heaven in the Filly & Mare Turf (drawn three) and Intelligence Cross in the Juvenile Turf (drawn eight) received favourable stall positions. Both will be ridden by Ryan Moore.
There was confirmation too that Found would swerve the Classic in favour of a repeat bid in the Turf, for which she was trimmed into 2-1 (from 3) by Coral after drawing gate ten. Former favourite Flintshire, who drew four, is now 5-2 with Ballydoyle second-string Highland Reel, in 12, out to 10-3.
Frankie Dettori rides Ulysses (stall seven) in the Turf, one of four rides at Santa Anita along with the well-drawn Spain Burg (four) in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, Queen’s Trust (11) in the Filly & Mare Turf and Rodaini (12) in the Juvenile Turf. Rodaini’s regular rider Silvestre de Sousa is currently riding in Hong Kong.
In the Mile, Limato received a wide draw in ten and was eased to as big as 4-1 (from 3) by bet365, although trainer Henry Candy earlier in the week expressed a preference for being drawn wide over an inside spot, where bad luck in running can swiftly end a challenge. Limato’s chief rival Tepin was drawn two inside in eight.
