The summer season officially begins today as the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club kicks off its 2017 racing season. Anticipation has been running high for racing to begin “where the turf meets the surf”, more than usual, since the racetrack is gearing up to host its first Breeders’ Cup World Championship meet later this year.
Opening day features the $ 100,000 Oceanside Stakes for 3-year-olds on the turf. Getting things started once the gates open will be Del Mar’s annual hat contest, which will offer more than $ 5,000 in prizes.
Opening weekend will feature the return of champion Arrogate in the G2 San Diego Handicap.
