In Australia, top racemare Winx captured her 11th race in a row and seventh lifetime Group 1 victory in Saturday’s George Main Stakes, reports racing.com. The daughter of Street Cry raced near the rear of a small field early under Hugh Bowman, then rallied down the stretch to score by an easy 1 1/4 lengths over 1600m for trainer Chris Waller.
“Today’s win wasn’t a gap job, wasn’t intended to be either, she’s had four weeks between runs, just need to know where she is, plus we needed to win heading to the bigger targets,” said Bowman after the race. “She’s beaten inferior opposition today, but there is going to be nowhere to hide when we get to Melbourne.”
Up next, Winx will head to Melbourne for the Oct. 8 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) before the prestigious Cox Plate (2040m) on Oct. 22.
“You always look at other races,” Waller said, though he said that the Caulfield had always been the plan. “It looks to fit in nicely, gives you the run over 2000m on the left leg, Caulfield is probably not perfect for a Sydney horse first time, but she just has got that ability to put herself around and finish off.”
